Wild Cherry Tree Canker
The tree appears to be dead though still standing. The
Canker has some similarity to Chaga but is definitely something else. It
is not as black in color nor as cracked as Chaga. It is growing in a
lesion, probably caused by some other fungus, just like most of the Chaga I find
on birch. It is also similar in that it is brown in color if you scrape
the surface.

Brown showing where I scraped off the black. The tree is about 15" in
diameter before widening at the lesion.
Side view of the lesion.

Again the brow color where I scraped off the black.
