I was hoping it would turn out to be Canary Trich but when I looked in the guide, mine did not have the white gills.  In mine they were yellowish.

The cap on this one is 2.75".

Here is one more open and a yellower top.

Stem about 1.25".

Here is an old one.

One finally yielded a spore print.  It was white. A friend called my attention to the Cape Cod guide.  I looked at the gills more closely and they looked free, to me, rather then notched that most of the Trich appear to have.  Checking the descriptions I found only one that did not have notched gills and that is Tricholoma davissiae.  The plate on page 139 shows a mushroom that, in general, looks like mine except mine does not have that brown on the upper stem and the stems are bulkier.  So the ID is still up for grabs.
