Wine-stain Bolete
Xanthoconium
separans
7/15/05
Grafton MA
A mature specimen that was
not water logged by rain as the first I found.

On 7/23/05 I found a patch of 13 in
Rutland. Here are shown 10 of them.
Bill Yule thinks this might be Boletus varipes if the wine stain is missing.
It was missing on most of them. It is present on the oldest and largest at
bottom right. Since they were growing in a very small area, they most
likely are all separans. I noticed that young separans have no wine
colored stain in most cases. It is good to know and be aware that there is
a very similar species.
