Amanita Revisited
Grafton 7/23/07
A group of 5. The largest cap was
about 4".

Note the ring is a about the middle of the stalk.
Top

Edge cracked due dry weather.
Gills very crowded. Looks like a
"notch" before attaching to the stem.

Looks like the gills "run up" the stem for a while.
Stalk with ring.

The spore print was white. Spores
elliptical, measured 10.5 X 6.7 microns.
George Riner, who has much more
experience, thinks it is not Amanita porphyria but has no idea
what it might be. Noah S. found one like this and he too could not come up
with an identification.
On 12/22/10 Dave W. thought it might be Amanita spreta. Rod
T. replied:
"I agree with Dave. The color is very intense in this set of specimens. The
annulus on the stem did not become gray with age (two characters that I
associate with Amanita spreta); however, there is no other name for a relatively
robust species of section Caesareae with short marginal striations, a relatively
small volval sac, and cap color in the gray-brown to white range that grows in
the eastern U.S."
