Firm Russula
Russula compacta
Confirmed by Noah Siegel!
This mushroom looks like this one I
found in Paxton except that is smaller and does not
have as many tears. This cap measured 6". It had one tear in the cap
with another starting at about 9 o'clock. The cap had an unpleasant smell.
The cap had no taste.
The gills and stem slowly changed to a
brown color after handling.
Close-up of underside cap formation at the
tear.
This shows the knife slices across gills
that turned brown. There are droplets of water from the morning dew but no
milk at the cuts.
Spore print was white. Spores
measured 9.6 x 7.7 microns.
