Mushrooms in Shrewsbury
5/24/11
This large scaly mushroom attracted my attention. The
smaller red one also of interest. In both cases the gills are attached.
The larger one had a cap of 10.5"
Going by the black spore deposits I saw on older specimens I think both the Red
and the Tan mushrooms are Wine-cap Stropharia, aka
Stropharia
rugosoannulata
a choice edible.
Underside. Bulbous base with a very thick partial veil
ring.
A couple of hours later the gills are noticeably darker.
Sectioned stem.
Spore print black. Spore, pore at the
tip, measured 13.4x8.64 microns
